Field Identification

Examine what is visible. Narrow what is possible.

A developing workspace for evidence-led field identification.

Field Identification will guide users through observable features, physical properties, simple field tests, and geological context to progressively narrow possible interpretations. The workspace provides a framework for careful comparison and leaves definitive identification to further evidence and expert review.

Review planned instruments

Progressive comparison, with uncertainty intact.

  1. 01

    Observe

Record visible form, texture, structure, color, scale, and condition before interpretation.

  2. 02

    Test

Use appropriate physical properties and simple field tests without overstating what they establish.

  3. 03

    Compare

Review the evidence against plausible groups, materials, processes, and geological context.

  4. 04

    Narrow

Retain multiple interpretations when evidence is incomplete or important diagnostic features are absent.

Four evidence-specific workspaces.

These cards describe the intended analytical scope. The individual tools are not yet available and are intentionally non-interactive.

Fossil Identification

Examine morphology, symmetry, material, preservation style, skeletal structure, and geological context to narrow possible fossil groups.

Appearance alone cannot establish an exact species.
